On Books : The One Thing You Need to Know

After a long time I am returning again to books that I have enjoyed reading. I am not writing here a review but a short write up that may make some readers of this blog very curious about the books I like.

Marcus Buckingham’s ‘The One Thing You Need to Know’ catches attention because we crave to know the One Thing that makes the big difference.

Buckingham ends the book with a conclusion that is titled ‘Intentional Imbalance.’ Here is how that chapter begins, I am sure you will enjoy reading it:

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, two of the most eminent programmers in the Universe, Fook and Lunkwill, turned on Deep Thought, the super computer they had built, composed themselves, and leaned in to ask their question.
“O Deep Thought Computer,” Fook said. (At least I think it was Fook who actually posed the question. I am relying on Douglas Adam’s book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as my primary source material for this.) “The task we have designed you to perform is this. We want you to tell us ….the Answer!”

“The Answer?” said Deep Thought. “The Answer to what?”

“Life!” urged Fook.

“The Universe!” said Lunkwill.

“Everything!” they said in chorus.

It took Deep Thought more than seven million years to compute the answer, but unfortunately, when he revealed it to the assembled multitudes, it proved to be possibly the least illuminating answer anyone has ever heard. According to Deep Thought, the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything was “forty-two.”

If you have read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you’ll recognize this for what it is: Douglas Adams poking fun at anyone trying to find the one Answer. If you go on searching for it, his story warns us, you may wind up looking as daft as Deep Thought.

Enjoy Reading….
